A playful poem inspired by Julia Donaldson's tone
The other night, I was reading bedtime stories with my youngest daughter—something we always cherish at the end of the day. One of our favourites is The Scarecrows’ Wedding by the brilliant Julia Donaldson. As we turned the pages, I couldn’t help but smile at how I could put the experience of being a wedding photographer into a lovely story like this and how it reminded me of all the lovely couples I work with—planning “the best wedding yet!”
It got me thinking about the rollercoaster that is wedding planning: the joy, the nerves, the to-do lists... and yes, even the post-wedding blues once it’s all over! So, I decided to write a little poem for all the nearly weds out there—a playful, light-hearted reminder to enjoy the journey.
No matter how you choose to celebrate, this time is yours. Embrace the planning, laugh through the chaos, and on the big day itself, pause and soak it all in. It’s a day you’ve dreamed of—and you deserve every beautiful moment....

Two people in love with a sparkle and smile, Sat down to plan the big day in a while. A list soon was written with care and delight: “A wedding to cherish, a day that feels right.”
A meadow or manor, a candlelit aisle, Flowers in buckets, a soft countryside style. They pencilled in dresses and favours and cake, And dreamed of the memories they soon hoped to make.

They laughed over seating, they tasted the food, Picked songs for the evening to lift every mood. The details grew lovely, the mood full of cheer, But one little thought whispered soft in their ear…
“We’ll need someone special—someone who sees, The glances, the giggles, the kiss in the breeze. Not just any photos, but natural and true—A story of us, with a magical view.”

So they searched for a soul with a lens full of light, Someone whose calm made the nervous feel right. Then in came a name with a soft golden thread: Helen Cotton Photography, gracefully led.
With warmth and with laughter, with timing just so,
She captured the feeling—the sun’s gentle glow.
From morning excitement to first dances late, Each frame told their story. It all felt like fate.
Not stiff, not posed, not filtered or staged—Just real love unfolding, beautifully aged. Moments they’d treasure as years rolled along, Each photo a memory, each image a song.

So couples take note as you plan your big day: Choose people who help you feel easy and yay! And when it comes time to freeze joy in motion—
Pick someone who photographs hearts with devotion.
The End (but really, just the beginning...) Helen Cotton Photography — For Love That Lasts Beyond the Day
